Why should you study animal science?

Because it gives the person who is taking this degree a more in-depth understanding of what, how, and why an animal is what it is and why people who raise these creatures do what they do for the benefit of not only the animals, but also of themselves and the animals' outcome.

It's not really a matter of "should" because what you wish to study in college or university is your choice. However animal science is important because it is fundamental to agriculture; livestock are fundamental to agriculture in the way they are used, how they are fed, what they are used for as end-products, those sort of things. Increase in knowledge of the different sectors of the livestock industry can give a person a lot of insight of what actually goes on instead of relying on what the media tells you. In the schooling of animal science one can decide which livestock sector that he/she wants to expand on: Equine, Bovine, Porcine, Oovine, Avian, or even Exotics. At the same time you can take courses on other animals besides the one[s] you are interested in, or other courses on related subjects such as crops, forage, rangeland management, horticulture, agricultural business management, economics, etc.

With an Animal Science degree (or diploma or certificate, which ever school you attend to) you have a wide array of jobs at your disposal to be hired on to or develop yourself. You can go back to your roots and start raising livestock, or work at a company or even for the government that specializes in work with and/or studying animals, or any job you fancy.
