Police are important to ensuring the safety and livelihood of cities and communities. They also perform essential functions that maintain the court systems, communications system, and are the first line of defense to maintain civil obedience (though many time, they will stand down if the cause is appropriate, regardless of orders).
For any society that claims to live under the "rule of law," law enforcement officers are of the highest priority in the enforcement of that premise. They are the first-line enforcers of criminal law. It is pretty much a self-answering question... Imagine for a few minutes how safe and secure you, or anybody, would be in a society in which there was no police agency to ensure the protection of you and your family and belongings . . that is known as Anarchy.
