The immune system protects the body from disease by attacking anything foreign to it. The redness and swelling around a cut or scratch is your immune system at work, bringing more blood to the area and creating heat to fend off invading bacteria which cause infection, or to the site of a splinter where pus may form to push the splinter out. People with organ transplants have to take anti-rejection drugs because the body's immune system "sees" it as a foreign object. People with AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) often succumb to pneumonia or other opportunistic diseases because their immune systems are "deficient" and the disease also attacks the cells that fight infection. Lupus is a disease of the immune system; Multiple Sclerosis may be an immune system disease along with Lou Gherig's disease (ALS: Amylotropic Lateral Sclerosis). These are so-called "auto-immune" diseases, like AIDS, where the body's immune system attacks its own body.
Immunology deals with the study of the immune system and the various disorders and infections that affect it. It is vitally important to understand how it works in order to develop treatment to help manage and reduce the drastic effects brought on by disease.
The advances in immunology have lead to the development of a variety of vaccines, diagnostic testing kits and numerous cancer medications that are in wide use today.
