In the past horses were the sole form of transportation over great distances. In more recent times it is fun, good exercise, a fun sport, and for some a way to rehabilitate their bodies or minds. Many wounded veterans use horses as a mental release and just as many physically handicapped individuals can and do use horses to help strengthen their muscles for daily activities like walking as horseback riding is the only sport that fully mimic's the muscle usage for walking. This allows some people with limitations such as Cerebral Palsy to be able to walk or even just sit up.
Horses snort when riding to clear their airways and communicate their emotions. It can also be a sign of excitement or alertness.
