Cerebral Palsy is most usually due to a birth injury to the baby's brain. If labour is difficult and the baby's brain is deprived of oxygen, part of the brain is damaged. If the baby has only had a short time with low oxygen, the cerebral palsy will be mild, but the longer the oxygen deprivation goes on, the worse the brain damage will be. With proper and careful care during labour and childbirth, the incidence of people with cerebral palsy should go down.

By studying what effect damage to different parts of the brain have on peoples bodies and functions, researchers can try to find ways of helping to overcome some of the patient's difficulties by developing drugs, surgeries and exercises such as physiotherapy.
