Fortunately yams are not a meat product, so temperature is somewhat irrelevant. Temperature is more of a precaution to ensure that all possible bacteria is eliminated in meat products. Vegetables may have bacteria, but definitely not at the same level. All you really need to do is check the softness of the yam. Everyone has a different liking to the doneness of most vegetables, so they can be ready while they're still a little tough or when they're very soft. Similar to cooking a regular potato, you can check the doneness with just a simple butter knife by sliding it into the yam and if the knife slides effortlessly then they're fully cooked. Hope that helps you!
