according to shia scholars such as Mesbah Yazdi and Javadi Amoli, in jurisprudence we have two kind Jihad. the first kind of Jihad is defensive jihad which is the basis and principle of theory of war for Shia. according to defensive war, all Muslim have to defend themselves versus their enemy. the second jihad is initiate jihad which give right to Muslim to attack of any attacker. but here one point is so important on the basis of which initiate jihad itself is a kind of defensive jihad and in fact former is a extension of the latter. among this defense is more important than attack.

Why does Islam have a jihad?

Simply put, Jihad exists in Islam because the Qur'an demands it. However, it should be noted that there are two forms of jihad. One is an internal struggle to be true and faithful to Islam amidst all of the struggles and difficulties that the world presents. The second is the command to rise militarily in defense of Islam when Muslims are under attack, especially from non-Muslims. This second form of jihad is popularly considered the "holy war" type of jihad.

What is the US role in the Sunni and Shiite Conflict?

No. The Sunni-Shiite Divide occurred in the 600s C.E., over 800 years before Colombus even discovered America. There are Muslims that claim that the United States is taking activities designed to keep the Sunnis and Shiites from reconciling, but even if it were true, this would not make the United States in anyway responsible for the original split and the majority of Sunni-Shiite animosity and grievances. This is false, though, since Sunni and Shiite Muslims have actually been brought together politically by the United States both domestically and in Iraqi politics. The United States has never supported a country or an army because it is Sunni or Shiite and even its detractors have noted that the United States supported Shiite Iran (under the Shah), Sunni Iraq (under Saddam Hussein), Wahhabi Saudi Arabia, and Israel all for primarily strategic reasons.

What does jihad mean and who were the warring fractions?

There are two questions here:1) What is a Jihad?Jihad is a tenet of Islam and a religious duty to strive in the way of God. There are two general ways to do this, the Greater Jihad and the Lesser Jihad. The Greater Jihad is an introspective journey to conquer your internal demons and follow the Divine Laws more closely than previously; this kind of jihad should be entirely peaceful. The Lesser Jihad refers to conflicts and confrontations between Muslims and Non-Muslims or other Muslims, which often erupt in war, but can also be performed through non-violent protests, debate, and advocacy.2) Who were the Warring Factions? If this is referring to the original jihads, these were the wars by Meccans, lead by the Polytheistic Qoreish Tribe against the Medinan Confederacy of Muslims and other tribes (both Polytheists and Jews). As time has gone on there have been innumerable jihads against numerous enemies. In the Middle Ages and up to the modern day (like in the Iran-Iraq War) Muslims will even declare jihad against other Muslims if it suits them politically.

When is military jihad permitted?

Military jihad is traditionally permitted in Islam under specific circumstances, primarily for self-defense, to protect the oppressed, or to restore justice. It is often framed within the context of responding to aggression or persecution against Muslims. Additionally, it requires the declaration by a legitimate authority and must adhere to ethical guidelines, such as avoiding harm to non-combatants. Importantly, interpretations of jihad can vary widely among different scholars and communities.

Did God sanctify jihad?

According to Islam, Jihad is sanctified by God, provided that it is performed in accordance with the requirements stated in the Shari'a. Just about every other group of people rejects the concept of Jihad as something sanctified by God, either because they do not believe that God has ordered Muslims to become stronger in their faith or conquer other countries or because they do not believe that the Muslim God exists.
