The job of a search and rescue dog is, well, just that: searching out victims of a catastrophe (say a massive earthquake that buried hundreds of people under buildings, or an avalanche that buried people under the snow) and helping to rescue them. The dogs search buy smell. When they detect the scent of someone who is buried, they alert their owners and any other personnel by barking, and sometimes they even start trying to dig the person out on their own.
They really are amazing dogs.
