The main responsibility of a cardinal is to elect a new pope. However, most cardinals also work in various other capacities in the Church. Some work in the Roman Curia and others are bishops or Archbishops.

The most important role of the cardinal is to form the conclave to elect a new pope when the Holy see is vacant (sede vacante) they also help to run the Roman Curia (government) and advise the pope.
