Particles in gases are very far apart and have no forces between them, this is why they can be compressed. Containers holding gas (such as an aerosol cannister) explode because the heat gives energy to the particles and they hit the container walls more violently until it breaks.

Atoms or molecules of a gas are far apart and move independently of each other. So a gas can be expanded or compressed to a much greater degree than can a solid or liquid.

Changes in volume of a gas are accompanied by changes in pressure and / or temperature. These changes can be explained in terms of the kinetic theory of gases.

Kinetic' means, due to motion. The kinetic theory of gases is based on the idea that gases consist of atoms or molecules moving rapidly in all directions. Each of these gas particles have a kinetic energy that depends upon its temperature. Gas molecules experience elastic collision with each other and thus total energy of the gas molecules remain same. The attraction between the molecules of a gas is considered to be almost zero. The volume of the molecules of a gas as compared with the total volume of gas is considered to be negligible (can be ignored). The time of collision of a molecule with another is so small as compared with time spent between collisions that it can also be ignored. Gas molecules also collide with the wall of the container and their momentum remain same but its direction is reversed. This rate of change of momentum (or the force they exert per unit area of the container is the pressure of the gas.

All gas molecules are in constant motion throughout any container that confines them, with a total energy and a distribution of energies among the individual molecules that depends on the pressure within the gas and the absolute temperature.
