A horn pipe is so called because they are shaped like a horn. They are not made of horn though, but rather an African gourd called a calabash. The gourd is dried and then the top part with the curved stem is removed and used as the body of the pipe. A meerschaum bowl is fitted to the large part of the gourd where tobacco is smoked. Meerschaum is an absorbent stone found in Turkey that is used for the bowl of the pipe that will soak up excess moisture produced while smoking.
