Speaking generally, because the question is very general, when humans first arrived the land was forested and lush. Humans stated clearing the land and planting their crops. Through inappropiate farming methods, the topsoil eventually got bown away, or washed away and much of the land turned into the dessert that it is now. The same thing is happening in the Amazon. Local farmers are clearing the rain forest of it's trees for subsistance farming. The topsoil of the rain forest is very thin. After a couple years the land is no longer viable to sustain crops. The people then have to go cut down more rain forest to plant their crops. We are loosing the "lungs of the earth" at an alarming rate.
