I have also been looking up this very same information and maybe this can help you. The biggest known fly from the family Diptera (true flies) is Gauromydas heros . Horse flies can attain a body length of nearly an inch and are the most massive of the flies. Crane flies can have leg spans of up to 4 inches but are thin and spindly.
