The "wide open" plains pale in comparison to the earth's oceans....the largest habitat / habitats. Of course the ocean can be compartmentalized into many pieces based on depth, temperature, etc., but whales are free to travel (and do) many thousands of miles (sometimes annually, and sometimes randomly!).
