The main highway in the Northern Territory is the Stuart Highway. Named after Scottish explorer John McDouall Stuart, who was the first to cross Australia south to north and back, the Stuart Highway roughly follows his track through central Australia.The Barkly Highway extends from the Queensland border at Cloncurry to the Stuart Highway north of Tennant Creek.The Victoria Highway joins the Great Northern Highway in Western Australia to the Stuart Highway.
The Barkly Tableland is an extensive plateau which extends from Camooweal, south of the Gulf of Carpentaria in northern Queensland, about 560km west to the Northern Territory, as far as the Stuart Highway. It is predominantly used for cattle stations. It is marked by seasonal watercourses, so can become wet and impassable in some places during the summer monsoon, while subartesian bores supply water during the dry season. The Barkly Tableland was named by William Landsborough in honour of Sir Henry Barkly, who was Governor of Victoria from 1856-1863.
