This is embarassing. One of our maps says that #100 is on the south end of Royal Court,
where the house has the bricks around the mail box and the little tree, and our other map
says that 100 is at the north end, on the cul-de-sac, by the house with the rectangular
swimming pool behind it.
So we can't exactly locate #104, but we're going to try to get close:
The center of the intersection at the south end of Royal Ct, where it runs into
Royal Oak Dr, is located at
32.31719° north latitude
90.33642° west longitude.
We hope that's close enough for your purposes.
The center of the intersection of Royal Ave and Diamond Bridge Ave is located at 40.9490° north latitude 74.1538° west longitude.
No, that's latitude. Longitude is measured east or west of the Prime Meridian, which runs through the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England.
Lines of latitude encircle the Earth horizontally, parallel to the Equator. Lines of longitude run from pole to pole, with the Prime Meridian (zero longitude) passing through the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, London, England.
Every point on Earth has a different set of latitude/longitude coordinates, and the Mt. Royal Park is a big place, with many different points in it. The George Etienne Cartier statue near the north end of the park ... kind of just across the road to the south of the Jeanne-Mance Park soccer field ... is located at 45.51424° north latitude 73.58525° west longitude. Other places in the park have slightly different coordinates.
Latitude and longitude are the angular distance that a place is, north or south of the equator and east or west of the Prime Meridian (which was defined as passing through the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England). You can identify a location as precisely as you wish. If you have a street address and would like to find the latitude and longitude, one of the most useful tools available is Google Earth.
The Royal Observatory at Greenwich ... the world reference for 0° longitude ... has a latitude of about 51° 28' 45" . So 1 degree north of that historic place would have latitude of 52° 28' 45" . That latitude has no particular significance for navigation.
The Prime Meridian is the line of zero longitude that passes through the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, UK. Lines of longitude radiates outwards from the prime meridian towards the west and east. Latitude and longitude enable a location to be fixed on the Earth.
No. It's strictly a system for locating and describing points on the surface of the Earth. Nothing about the latitude/longitude system is defined in terms of anything in the sky. All that's needed in order to lay out the whole system is the Earth's poles and the Royal Observatory at Greenwich.
The latitude and longitude references are lines, not points. The reference for latitude is the line that forms a circle and consists of all points with zero latitude. That line is called the "equator". The reference for longitude is the line that forms a semi-circle and consists of all points with zero longitude. That line is called the "Prime Meridian".
The worlds prime meridian is based at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, London. This was established by an International Conference in 1884
The center of the intersection of E Pascagoula and State St, in downtown Jackson a block east of City Hall, is located at 32.29715° north latitude 90.18076° west longitude. By the way, this point happens to be 9.21 miles east-southeast of that swimming pool at the north end of Royal Ct, in case you were curious.
It does. It is the plane angle, measured at the centre of the earth, between the given position and the equator due south or north of that position. The third dimention is not necessary until longitude is added.
