They cannot pass a law that goes into effect retroactively. This means that they can't make something that was done prior to their passing the law illegal. It prevents them from making people that did something they didn't like a criminal for something done months or even years earlier.

∙ 15y agoI bellieve the only type of law the Constitution specifically forbids is an "ex post facto" law. That would be a law that provides a penalty for something that has already happened but was not illegal when it occurred. Lily: It States in the Constitution that "No Bill of Attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed. Definitions: Bill of Attainder- a law declaring that a person is guilty of a particular crime ex post facto Law: a law that is made effective prior to the date that it was passed and therefore punishes people for acts that were not illegal at the time.
