To buy alcohol in a public house or shop in the UK, you need to be 18. To drink in a pub or club, you need to be 18. However, if you are over 16, you may drink beer, cider or wine (or all 3) with a meal in a licensed restaurant. There are no legal restrictions on drinking at home (although if you are under 18, someone else would have to buy it for you). A court, or social services, might decide that giving a young person excessive booze for their age constitutes child neglect.

The laws for purchasing and consuming alcohol on licensed premises in the UK are somewhat convoluted.

Generally you have to be 18 years of age.

However you may be allowed alcohol when younger under certain circumstances. When having a meal with a responsible adult for instance.
