To drive on public roads in the UK, you must be at least 17 (16 if you are eligible through disability) and hold a valid provisional or full license. If your licence is provisional, you must be accompanied by a full license holder who is at least 21, who has held that full license for at least 3 years.

There is no age restriction to drive on private land with no public access provided you have the landowner's permission.

From the age of 16, you can ride a moped or scooter of up to 49cc and also drive a farm tractor.

From 17 years of age you can drive a motor car, van, minibus, motorcycle of any engine size, and 'light goods vehicle' (that is, a heavy van or small lorry).

From the age of 21 you can drive a heavy goods vehicle or a large passenger vehicle. You can also hold a private pilot's licence at this age.

At 17 years old you apply for a provisional driving licence, which entitles you to drive only if you have a qualified driver sitting next to you, display 'L' plates on the front and rear of the vehicle, and are not allowed on motorways. You also cannot drive hire vehicles. You are awarded a full driving licence after passing both parts of a two-part driving test, one of which involves a classroom 'theory' test. You have to pass a two-part test to drive a motorcycle of any engine size as well, although from the age of 17 you can learn on a bike of any capacity as long as it has a sidecar fitted.

There are special driving tests for heavy goods vehicles and large passenger vehicles too (known as HGV and PSV tests)- the HGV test is divided into two, one for rigid vehicles and the other for articulated lorries or trucks. Novices are advised to pass their rigid HGV test first before progressing on to articulated vehicles.

However, if a bus (either single or double decker) is over 20 years old, it can be driven on a car licence as long as you carry no more than 4 passengers in it apart from yourself. The same applies to heavy goods vehicles that are over 45 years old.

Three-wheeler cars can be driven on a full motorcycle licence, without the need for a full car licence.

Sixteen year olds who are disabled are allowed to drive specially-adapted cars as long as the speed of the vehicle is regulated to no more than 45mph.
