What are the legal issues with heroin?

Heroin is categorized as Class A drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act. A charge of possession of a drug with intent to supply can be brought by the police. This includes giving a substance away for free, and can be for any amount of Heroin that the court feels is too unreasonably large to be for personal use only.

Are painkillers addictive?

Opiate analgesics (narcotics) like Morphine, Codeine, Heroin, and Fentanyl do have the potential for abuse and/or dependence and are controlled substances. However, several studies have found that the vast majority of people do not abuse narcotics. Physical dependence is common with long term opiate use. So most people who have been taking a narcotic for a long time can be dependent but not addicted. Addiction, which is not a real medical term, is a behaviour. When the drugs cause problems (family, friends, financial, health issues, legal issues) in a persons life yet they continue to use a drug they are likely addicted.

Can you get addicted to both legal and illegal drugs?

Yes, it is certainly possible to get addicted to legal and illegal drugs alike. Alcohol, one of the most widely consumed legal drugs, can be physically and psychologically addictive. Caffeine, while not often thought of as a drug, can in fact cause (relatively mild) psychological addiction. Of course, illegal drugs such as methamphetamine, heroin, and cocaine are also addictive. Prescription medications can also be considered legal in a sense, and even those prescribed some these substances can become dependent or addicted. Opioid painkillers such as morphine, hydrocodone, and oxycodone are possibly some of the most addictive 'legal' drugs. Individuals using these medications for chronic pain, as well as those frequently abusing them, can suffer severe, though generally not life threatening, withdrawal symptoms that are exceedingly unpleasant.
