Best Answer

The dot structure for bromine dioxide starts with a Br atom in the center. To the left and right is a singly bonded O atom, each with a pair of dots on the three unbonded sides. The Br atom has a pair of dots on the upper and lower unbonded sides.

It is hard to draw the Lewis dot structure of BrO2-, bromite. O---Br---O

First:

a) oxygen has (2 paired electrons) x 2 plus 2 unpaired electrons. (6 electrons)

b) Br has (2 paired electrons) x 3 plus 1 unpaired electron. (7 electrons)

c) there is an extra electron from the negative charge on the bromite ion. (1 electron)

  1. Draw Br with two electrons above, two electrons to the left and two electrons below and one electron to the right. (7)
  2. To the right of the Br you drew in 1. above draw an O. Put 2 electrons above, two electrons to the right, 1 electron to the left to pair with the one you drew in 1. above and 1 electron below. Use the extra electron from c) above to pair that electron. (6+1)
  3. Draw another O to the left of the Br. This O will form a dative covalent bond with the Br. This O is going to use one of the Br electron pairs to satisfy its octet rule. Draw the O with two electrons above, below and to the left. It should now have 8 electrons. (6)

N is the central atom with O and Br below it, it has a bent or angular structure. Between the N and the O is a double bond while the Br only has a single bond.
