Armadillos are cool little creatures. They are in the same order as sloths and anteaters but are much smaller. They have an armor-like protective shell they use for defense in the wild and live mostly in warmer environments.
The nine-banded armadillo breeds in the summer. The embryo isn't implanted until 14 weeks after mating. Females almost always give birth to four identical young, all of the same sex, about four months after the embryo is implanted. The young are born with their eyes open and are walking within a few hours. Their skin is soft when they are born, but it slowly hardens as they get older. They nurse for about two months but will stay with their mother for a couple of more months.
The average lifespan for armadillos is 12 to 15 years, if they are in captivity. Since they are slightly endangered, the lifespan is much shorter in the wild.
Armadillos are placental mammals from the New World which have a leathery armour shell. Their life cycle is that same as that of any other mammal.
Life spans vary from species to species but the nine-banded armadillo found in the United States lives from 12 to 15 years.
