Depending on what you mean, the answer is either 65 years or 4 years. Pakistan has been an independent nation since 1947, but has gone through several changes of government in the meantime. the current rule of Asif Ali Zardari dates back to 2008.

Pakistan, then part of British India, achieved independence from the British Empire in 1947. The former British colony was almost immediately partitioned, with Muslim-dominated areas going to Pakistan, and Hindu-dominated areas going to India. Originally, Pakistan comprised West Pakistan, which is the modern Pakistan, and East Pakistan, which is today Bangladesh. East Pakistan became Bangladesh after winning its independence in the 1971 war.

As far as different ruling regimes in Pakistan, the state was a British Dominion, loosely affiliated with Britain, until 1956, when it became an Islamic Republic. The first democratic elections were held in 1970, followed by a military coup in 1977. Elections were held again in 1988, and democratic rule lasted until the 1998 coup by Pervez Musharraf. Musharraf stepped down in 2008, and Pakistan now finds itself in a grey area, somewhere between a democracy and military rule, while some of the outlying tribal areas are virtually independent of Islamabad.
