Actually it depends on a great range of factors. The main ones are

1) Whether you worked full time hours until the end;

2) Whether you retired early;

3) Position you were in when you retired.

Depressingly for a male teacher who works full time as a Head of Department or lower and retires at retirement age and not early then the average life expectancy after retirement is a glorious 18 months! There is a government review on teachernet.gov.uk that gives the full analysis.

In 2001 it is recorded in Hansard that the Secretary of State was asked and Twigg confirmed the original poster's assertion that it was 86 for men and 89 for women. However, this answer was based on the best possible outcomes and optimum retirement factors. So anywhere between 61 and 90 depending on how lucky you are!
