  • If left untreated, ear mite infestations will lead to infection, starting at the skin but then moving deeper into the rabbit's body -- symptoms include fever, depression, neurological effects like head tilt and balance problems ... generally speaking, serious illness! The mites themselves will also start to move all over the body in extreme cases (they won't just stick to the ears).
  • Bad cases of ear mite infestations will cause permanent damage (scarring) to the ears.
  • Ear mite infestations are very painful and itchy. Pain/severe discomfort, whatever the cause, is always dangerous in rabbits because rabbits often decide to stop eating as a result, but rabbits can't safely fast so when they stop eating they're at risk of G.I. stasis (a serious, life-threatening illness).

Ear mite infestations are easily treated but once infections or G.I. stasis set in, the treatment becomes much more complicated and expensive. If you see any signs of parasite infestation on your rabbit, bring her to the "rabbit-savvy" vet as soon as possible. See the related links and questions below for more help.
