I cannot answer that question, but would love an answer. This morning I found something that looks like a chicken gizzard in one of my chicken's nest. This chicken has not been laying properly for a couple of weeks. Would love an answer to what this "thing" is.

the chickens eat lots of limestone and shells to fill their gizzards and create their eggs. the gizzard then mashes up the food with the rocks and shells in there. they do this by moving their head "like a chicken" which moves their gizzard back and forth.

Does a gizzard on a chicken store food?

The gizzard is the lump of muscle that grinds the food of the chicken. The food passes into the crop, and is softened, then through the stomach where digestive juices are added, then into the gizzard, where the food is ground up by all the bits of grit the bird eats from day to day. The gizzard is red meat, and in the olden days when you bought a bird the gizzard was sometimes left inside. it has quite a unique flavour, and takes a lot of cooking time to soften.

Where do chicken gizzards come from?

The gizzard is an organ unique to fowl, seed eaters specifically. The gizzard actually holds small pieces of gravel and sand ingested by the bird to help grind down grains and seeds. It is therefore part of the digestive tract, located somewhere between the beak and the bottom.

What are you eating when you eat gizzards?

The word "gizzard" comes from the Middle English giserdd, which derives from a similar word in Old French, and earlier from the Vulgar Latin "*gicerium", which follows from the Latin word "gigeria", meaning cooked entrails of poultry. The Latin word "gigeria" probably is derived from the Persian word for liver, which is "jiger". Emus, turkeys and chickens, like all birds, have gizzards. Mullets (Mugilidae) found in estuarine waters worldwide, and the gizzard shad, or mud shad, found in freshwater lakes and streams from New York to Mexico, have gizzards. The Gillaroo (Salmo stomachius), has a gizzard. It is a species of trout found in Lough Melvin in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It is a distinct species, characterized by a rich coloration. Its gizzard is used to aid the digestion of water snails, the main item of its diet. Crocodiles also have gizzards
