In my opinion, I think jazz and swing was important because it was a cheap form of entertainment that took peoples' minds off the difficulties of everyday life, even if it was for only a few hours.

Some people may refer to that time's music as 'Swing Music', since a majority of it is upbeat and just you know, swingy. Though there are other versions of 'swing music' from the 1920s that sound a bit more like Jazz, or just different in it's own gerne; I belive that type of music has yet to be properly named. I simply call it 'old timey music'. : )
