The tectonic plates move because the area below them (the mantel) is melted rock that is heated by the Earth's core. This causes the hotter lower area to float up as the upper area cools (called convection). This movement of the liquid rock causes the tectonic plates on top to move.

So the answer would be the energy responsible for the movement of the tectonics plates is heat from the Earth's core.

Did the upper mantle or core of earths surface drive the plate tectonics?

The mantle, being of a silly-putty-like consistancy, is responsible for the movement of the plates on earth's crust, or plate tectonics.

What are the main sources of heat?

The heat driving plate tectonics comes almost 100% from radioactive decay in the core and mantle.

Which theory describes the motion of earth's crust on its mantle?

plate tectonics=D

Are plate tectonics caused by convection currents in the mantle?

That is the current theory of plate tectonics.

What is the motion of earth's crust on the mantle?

Tectonics.

How Does the Mantle Affect the Earth's Crust?

Convection currents in the mantle create plate tectonics.

Plate tectonics used in a sentence?

In geomorphology, Plate Tectonics is the process by which the continents and the oceanic plates are moved across the face of the Earth. This is driven by thermal upwelling in the mantle, and originates from radioactive energy generated in the core of the Earth.

What movements of the earth's crust and mantle are referred to as?

Plate tectonics.

What is the effect on a plate when slab sinks?

The slab sinks faster and this pulls on the rest of the plate, continuing plate tectonics. Mantle convection creates the instability that allows plate tectonics to get going and helps a little, but it's not thought to be the main driving force.

The theory of plate tectonics explains the movement of the plates by convection cells in which layers?

mantle or upper mantle

What do scientists call the theory that describe the motion of the plates?

The theory of plate tectonics describes how plates move. The main driving force is convection currents in the mantle.

What is the theory that states that earths crust and upper mantle move around on a speacial layer of the mantle?

Plate tectonics.
