my book says aldosterone

student

I believe that there are 3 that are important as outlined below.

A textbook that I used to teach from used this to help students remember- Salt Sugar Sex

1. Testosterone- sex

2. Aldosterone-salt

3. Cortisol-sugar

Now, Cortisol aka glucocorticoids get their name because their main function is to raise the blood sugar level in the body. They also have anti-inflammatory properties so they are used in rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammed conditions. They are better known to us as steroids.

Aldosterone helps maintain blood pressure levels via the kidneys. This helps the kidneys to reabsorb sodium in order to maintain the blood pressure. Remember whereever water goes so does sodium! Aldosterone is triggered when there is a drop in sodium levels in the body.

Testosterone assists in the development of sexual organs in mostly males but also females too.

Hope this helps

What are the main medical advantages of Isocort?

One of the main medical advantages of Isocort is that it is made from adrenal cortex. Another is that it is plant derived and contains less substances than other thyroid medicines.

Which hormones in the adrenal gland function to control water and electrolyte balance?

Aldosterone is excreted from the adrenal gland to control water and electrolyte balance in the body. Aldosterone is a considered a steroid hormone which is produced by the outer section of the adrenal cortex of the adrenal gland.

What is the purpose of an adrenocorticotropic hormone test?

Adrenocorticotropic hormone is a polypeptide tropic hormone produced and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. It is an important component of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and is often produced in response to biological stress.

What is the role of the cortex?

The main role of the olfactory cortex is detection of odors

What is the treatment called for addison's disease?

Addison's disease is caused by autoimmune damage to the adrenals or damage to the pituitary. In either case, the adrenal glands, will be unable to produce cortisol, aldosterone, testosterone (the main production site of testosterone for women are the adrenal glands), DHEA and about 40 other hormones. The treatment for Addison's Disease is called glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid replacement. There are two tests to determine if one has Addison's Disease, the ACTH stimulation test and Insulin Tolerance Test.

What does oestregen hormones do?

Estrogen is the main hormone, produced by ovary in female and is responsible for secondary sex characters of females and also for there behavior as a female, but minor amount of testosterone (Male hormone ) produced by Adrenal gland is also essential for it's integrity. Vise verse Testosterone, produced by male testes are essential for the secondary sex characters of males and small amount of estrogen produced by Adrenal gland is essential for it's integrity.

What gland produces catecholamines?

"Catecholamines are produced mainly by the chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla and the postganglionic fibers of the sympathetic nervous system. Dopamine, which acts as a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, is largely produced in neuronal cell bodies in two areas of the brainstem: the substantia nigra and the ventral tegmental area. The similarly melanin-pigmented cell bodies of the locus ceruleus produce norepinephrine." - WikipediaThe main catecholamines are epinephrine and norepinephrine, which are produced in the adrenal medulla (in the adrenal glands). Dopamine is the other, which is from neuronal cell bodies.

What are the hormones in the adrenal medulla?

Adrenal medulla is a portion of the adrenal gland. The adrenal medulla is located within the inner portion of the gland and is associated with stress.

What causes addison's disease?

most common cause of Addison's disease is the destruction and/or shrinking (atrophy) of the adrenal cortex. In about 70% of all cases, this atrophy is believed to occur due to an autoimmune disorder
