The main purpose of weight training is to gain muscular strength.

Other purposes include building the size of muscles, adding definition and muscle tone, decreasing reaction time and improving reflexes, practicing sports skills (such as a Baseball player who takes practice swings with a heavier bat), improving or maintaining general bodily health, and relieving stress.
