Distributor caps were originally made of a material called "Bakelite". It was strong, hard a very high resistance to electrical arcing. Problem was, if they began to arc, carbon would build up and the spark from the points would scatter all over the inside of the cap making a car undriveable. Now materials are more like plastic or other durable material that will resist electrical power.
