What is the material of distributor cap?
Distributor caps were originally made of a material called "Bakelite". It was strong, hard a very high resistance to electrical arcing. Problem was, if they began to arc, carbon would build up and the spark from the points would scatter all over the inside of the cap making a car undriveable. Now materials are more like plastic or other durable material that will resist electrical power.
# Unplug the distributor connector from wiring harness connector # Loosen the distributor cap retaining screws # Label and disconnect the spark plug cables from the distributor cap # Lift the cap off of the distributor # Note in which direction the distributor spark pick-up is pointing then pull the rotor off of the distributor shaft
On the 4.9 L ( 300 cubic inch ) straight 6 cylinder engine , the distributor is on the drivers side of the engine - the distributor cap is on top of the distributor On the V8 engines , the distributor is located on top of the engine at the front , the distributor cap is on top of the distributor Where one end of the spark plug wires all connect , the other ends…
rotor should point at number 1 plug lead when engine is at tdc make a mark with whiteout ,on outside of distributor before you remove distributor cap. make this mark where the #1 spark plug lead would be if distributor cap was on distributor when you remove cap this is where rotor needs to be pointing
The distributor cap should have a 1 marked on it On the V8 engines ( regardless of firing order ) the # 1 position on the distributor cap faces to the rear and slightly towards the drivers side of the engine On the 4.9 L ( 300 cubic inch ) straight 6 - the # 1 position on the distributor cap faces away from the engine
