It depends upon your state and if they have a law on this. In general there is no limit on the number of hours an employer can work an employee. The exception to this would be if the worker is under the age of 18 and the actual age. However there are laws on whether the employee should receive extra compensation for the hours worked.

How many hours can a 16 year old work in a day if he is still in school?

I believe that a sixteen year old can work up to 48 hours a week if they have a special variance. To find out what a variance is and how to get one, look it up on the child labor laws web page.

employment law, hourly worker told "we can't pay you overtime" Actual hours worked along with the 'required' 8 hours are documented. Overtime verifiable by presence of others at both ends of the day. Need to know if this is worth pursuing or not. Thank-yo?

Working over eight hours in one day does not neccessarily constitute overtime. Overtime may be determined by working over forty hours in one week, depending on the employer.

Is overtime optional?

That depends on the company. Some companies don't allow overtime, while others require employees to work overtime on a regular basis. Hourly paid employees, especially fast food workers, clerks, and cashiers are usually not allowed to work overtime because the companies don't want to pay the extra money. Salaried employees (those that make a set monthly or yearly amount no matter how many hours they work) are often required to work overtime, with no extra pay for it. As far as the law goes, no, overtime is not optional. Your employer has the right to keep you at work passed 8 hours if they chose to. If you have a union, your collective agreement often contains a clause that makes overtime optional.

If sally can paint a house in four hours and john can paint the same house in 6 hours how long will it take both of them to paint the house?

In one hour Sally paints one quarter and John paints one sixth, between them they paint five twelfths per hour so would take 2 hours 24 minutes if they worked together. But have you ever known a male and a female to work harmoniously together? Allow at least three hours!
