Division II schools may give out full-ride scholarships, if they so choose.

This is rare for most sports, however, as the total number of scholarships allowed is smaller than the number allowed in Division I. Players will typically get a half scholarship or a one-third scholarship.

The amount of the scholarship (up to a "full-ride") is dependent on the athlete's skill level and the team's need for a particular player.

Are Division 1-AA and Division II the same?

No, Division I-AA and Division II are totally different. Division II schools are generally small and don't have the athletic budgets that Division I and I-AA schools have. Currently in football, a Division I-AA school may have 63 players on scholarship (Division I is allowed 85) where a Division II school is allowed 36 players on scholarship.

How many scholarships can division 1A football give per year?

Division I-FBS (formerly Division 1-A) football programs are allowed to have 85 players on scholarship. The NCAA does not mandate that all 85 scholarships are "full" scholarships, although in practice it makes little sense to give a "half" or "fractional" scholarship since the rules govern number of players receiving a scholarship rather than the number of full scholarships. In Division I-FCS (formerly Division 1-AA), programs are allowed 63 "equivalencies," meaning that they can give more than 63 players a scholarship as long as those scholarships do not total more than the equivalent of 63 full scholarships. Division II programs are allowed 36 "equivalencies," and Division III are allowed zero (Division III sports are non-scholarship).

How many division 2 schoolarships can football teams have?

Division II allows 36 scholarship equivalencies. That means those 36 scholarships may be divided among the players (Division I-FBS programs are allowed to give a scholarship of any kind to 85 players, so in effect, all 85 get full scholarships; Division I-FCS are allowed 63 equivalencies that can be divided among no more than 85 total players; Division III does not allow scholarships).

How many division II schools are there?

There are 295 Division II Schools.

How many divisions are in the NCAA?

There are three divisions, Division I, Division II and Division III. Not all divisions sponsor all sports. For instance, ice hockey is not sponsored by the NCAA in Division II. Member institutions at the Division II level who sponsor the sport participate at the Division I or Division III level. Division I is also subdivided in the sport of football. Previously known as Division I-A and Division I-AA, the subdivisions are now referred to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and Football Championship Subdivision (FCS, respectively. The two major differences between the subdivisions are scholarship levels (FBS allows a total of 85 players to receive any level of scholarship while the FCS allows 63 full scholarship equivalents that may be divided between more than 63 players) and championship sponsorship. In the FBS, the NCAA does not sponsor a championship. For instance, Florida State won the "national championship" following the 2013 season, but Florida State is not "NCAA champions" in football. In the FCS, the NCAA sponsors a tournament to determine the national champion. Following the 2013 season, North Dakota State won the tournament and can claim both the title of "national champion" and "NCAA champion."

When was the last time division I lost to a division II?

In football, Division II programs rarely, if ever, play Division I-FBS programs. Each year, a handful of Division I-FCS (I-AA) schools lose to a Division II opponent. In basketball, Division II schools beat Division I schools annually, but most of the Division I programs are "low major" programs, meaning they are weak teams in weak conferences. The last "shocking" loss in basketball was in November, 2007 when #8 Michigan State lost at home to Division II Grand Valley State, 85-82 in double overtime.
