In the old system of landholding, 6-800 years ago, all land was owned by the King. Sections of this land were allocated to different 'noblemen' at the king's discretion. These noblemen, Knights, Barons, Counts, Earls etc would in turn have 'serfs' work the land and serve them as soldiers in time of war. This was the 'feudal' system.
