Early to bed, etc, possibly could indicate an unskilled job, more than likely it meant for everybody. Remember, when Ben Franklin said this, the people were living in a dawn to dusk society. This means that they had to take advantage of as much daylight as possible to see, work, read, study, farm, and do whatever else was necessary. Yes, I know that they had candles for evening hours, but candles were expensive and a fire hazard for the colonials.
