Judaism comes from the name Judah (Yehudah). Jacob, renamed Israel (Genesis ch.35), had twelve sons (ibid), from whom the Israelite nation descended. During the First Temple era (some 1000 years after Jacob's time), most of the Israelites were exiled by Shalmanesser and didn't return. The majority of the remainder were of the Israelite tribe of Judah (one of Jacob's sons); and since then that has been our name. The land of Israel was called Judea in Second Temple times; and it (Judeans; Judah-ites) gave rise to the names which we've been called in various languages: Jews, Yahud, Juifs, Juden, Zhid, Judios, etc.
