In the scripture you're referring to, Paul says the following:
(Romans 7:14-25)For the good that I wish I do not do, but the bad that I do not wish is what I practice. If, now, what I do not wish is what I do, the one working it out is no longer I, but the sin dwelling in me. I find, then, this law in my case: that when I wish to do what is right, what is bad is present with me. I really delight in the law of God according to the man I am within, but I behold in my members another law warring against the law of my mind and leading me captive to sin's law that is in my members. Miserable man that I am! Who will rescue me from the body undergoing this death? Thanks to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So, then, with [my] mind I myself am a slave to God's law, but with [my] flesh to sin's law.
The Bible account tells us that when Adam, a perfect man and son of God (Luke 3:38)(Genesis 1:31), sinned and rebelled against God, all his yet unborn children would come out Imperfect and sinful, through no fault of their own (Romans 5:12&14). In order to fulfill God's original purpose for man to live forever, a PERFECT man, and son of God would need to REPLACE our 'father', Adam, be EQUAL to him and be faithful. Jesus fulfilled that need (Hebrews 4:14 & 15). Because of that, we now have a choice. We can continue to follow Adam's sinful example and die, or follow 'the Last Adam', Jesus' example, and have the hope of everlasting life.(1 Corinthians 15:45)
Paul was saying that without Jesus' sacrifice in our behalf, we would have no hope, since "The wages sin pays is death" (Romans 6:23 ), and because we are all sinners (1 Corinthians 15:21+22), we would all just die(Ecclesiastes 9:5&10) We needed a savior...a ransomer...someone to 'buy us back' from sin and death. Thankfully, because of what Jesus did, there is hope. If we are obedient to God (Matthew 7:21-23), and work hard NOT to do what's bad in his eyes, the mistakes we make, because of our inborn imperfection, can be forgiven thanks to Jesus' sacrifice, which covers us perpetually, if we are truly repentant.(Acts 3:19)(Hebrews 10:10-14)
