There aren't any universal meanings for tattoo symbols.

Check out tattoo symbolism here:

But remember, sometimes a rose is just a rose. It doesn't mean or symbolize anything!

ALSO

Swallows stand for Love so a dead Swallow could symbolize a dead love or the belief that love is dead or possibly nonexistent.

The meaning of a bird tattoo (specifically a bluebird or a swallow) is that it is an old sailors tatoo. When a sailor had officially sailed 5000 miles on a ship he would traditonally tattoo the bird on his chest. If he hit 10,000 miles he would be able to get another! Patricia McLeanHamilton, ONCanada

If you're asking what the symbolism for a swallow is, it is that these birds were often the first to land on a ship that had been out to sea for long periods of time. So the bird came to symbolize being close to/finding your way home. That's why the tattoo of the swallow became popular for it's symbolism of home. The swallow is the harbinger of the spring season. Legend has it that the barn swallow, national bird of Estonia, represents free blue sky and eternal happiness to the Estonians.

I'm pretty sure there is no difference. the bluebird is a swallow (the tattoo swallow is based upon the Barn Swallow, the most common type of swallows. the Barn Swallow has a white/yellow/red belly and face, and blue back, so dark that it looks like black, but in the reflection of the sun you'll see that it's blue. that's why the swallow is mostly tattooed blue, and that's also why it's often referred to as the bluebird. I can't say I've ever gotten a real answer to any sort of difference between a tattoo sparrow and a tattoo swallow, apart from color. which pretty much means that they're all the same..

The meaning of the tattoo depends upon the receiver. This is true for all tattoos, they do not have one true meaning
