In The Bible, in Leviticus 19, it says "Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against a fellow Israelite, but love your neighbor as yourself."
The Christian New Testament recounts this in several places. In Luke chapter 10 for example, a man asks Jesus how he can obtain eternal life. Jesus asks the man what the law of Moses says. The man says, "You must love the lord your god with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength and all your mind and love your neighbor as yourself."
Jesus tells the man he's right, but the man probably doesn't want to waste unnecessary effort on someone who doesn't qualify as his neighbor, so he asks Jesus who is his neighbor.
Jesus then tells the story of the "Good Samaritan" which shows that a neighbor isn't just someone who lives next door, but anyone who needs restorative help that you can provide.
The commandment "to love thy neighbour" may be better understood once the word "Love" is adequately defined. "Love" may be categorised as "human love" and "Godly Love". Human love embodies brotherly or family love; and erotic love; warm and fuzzy as they may be. This love is dependant on circumstance and is conditional. Godly Love is not dependent on conditions nor circumstances. Scripture says that "God is Love". In humanity, Godly Love is closely related to the nature of God. Equally applicable to Yahweh or Allah. God is love and God loves. God's Love is consistent. It is discipline, in that God's Love is obedience to Godself. God's Love is community and promotes community among all of humanity. Therefore: When God commands us to love our neighbour, God means: Be community, promote harmony, discourage division. Make peace. Be disciplined in all activity, obey all law. Be fair. Respect rights of humanity and property and be joyful. Rejoice in honesty.
The reason it is so impotant is because With this Commandment in PLace and if it is Followed in the correct way, Then everybody will love each other as in Gods world everyone is each others neighbour An thus Creating a world with No hate, only Love.

There is a famous saying to "love your neighbor as yourself" and I kind of agree with that. It's most important that you focus on loving yourself first. Before you can love someone else, you have to know how to love yourself.
Treat them as you would treat yourself. Jesus said: Matthew 22:39 The second most important commandment is like it: 'Love your neighbor as you love yourself.'
Love God. Love your neighbor as yourself. Read the Gospels and they will tell you how to do this.
