In Matthew 25 there are two parables. First one is about the ten virgins, or bridesmaids, five wise and five foolish and the second one about three servants, two good and faithful and the other one wicked and slothful. This chapter in Matthew is a continuation of the Lord Jesus' reply to his disciples' question in Matthew 24:3 "And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the age?" So then these two parables have to do with the second coming of Christ and the consummation of this age.

In the first parable the Lord is a bridegroom, coming for his bride (the church Ephesians 5:23-32, 2Corinthians 11:2), He doesn't appear in person but there was a cry made, and the virgins go out to meet him (1Thessalonians 4:16,17) The anointing oil in the scriptures is symbolically representative of the Holy Spirit (1John 2:27, Acts 10:38) and here He is represented by lamp oil. The foolish virgins then are those professing Christians that belong to a church but not to Christ, Romans 8:9 "But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his."

In the second parable again there is distinction and separation between the genuine and the hypocrites. Here are three servants each receive a share of their Lord's wealth, it does not mean literal money, but rather any form of privilege from the spiritual view point. The fist two made good use of the gifts they received and are rewarded accordingly, but the third servant didn't seem to know what to with his, and so he leaves it untouched, buried in the ground. His excuse reveals that he never knew or trusted the Lord, he sees his lord as harsh and unjust and is judged according to his own words.
