This is the principle behind a compost pile which produces soil from such waste matter. Manure can be "cured" into usable soil by the same method.
Sometimes, though, this effect can be less beneficial. In a granary full of grain or a hayloft, if the grain or hay is moist, this effect can raise the temperature to a point where, if it is exposed to oxygen, it will burst into flame. Silos, granaries and haylofts can burst into flame as a result unless carefully monitored by the farmer.
