The nautical star goes back to old navy traditions. It was the sailor that brought the tattoo back with him to the states. The nautical star represents 5000 nautical miles sailed. There are many other old navy tattoos such as the sailor's knot, the full rigged sailing ship, a blue swallow, the compass, helms and anchors, mermaids, how about the golden dragon, a sea turtle for the shell back, or a blue nosed polar bear. All having a significant meaning. And the list goes on, this is only a few to list for the navy. How about the winged skull with a beret for the Army's elite paratroopers and Special forces? Classic piece. How about the Eagle, Globe and anchor for all those who are "Semper Fi"? Certain Battalion or Regimental crests have adorned bodies.

it means NOTHING. stop looking for meaning in all tattoos. many tattoos are simply whimsical and fun or aesthetically pleasing. they don't all mean things. also, different designs mean different things to different people. there isn't an end all answer. try asking the person it's on what it means to them.

i beg to differ. ALL tattoos have meaning. regardless of whether its historical or personal. the tattoo im getting this week has a double meaning. tho, to me, its more my own personal meaning thn the historical. im getting a St. Basils Cathedral, which in Russian prisons, has meaning to how many times you been imprisoned. each spire = each time. ex. 4 spires = imprisoned 4 times, etc. but to me, this tattoo means equality. bc when i first seen it, it whus while i whus playing COD:MW2. mind you, im a girl. & in this society, girls cnt, or shouldn't, play Video Games. its unlady like. another example, a friend of mine wnts to get a purple balloon. to her, its a rememberance of her grandmother tht passed, bc her grandmothers fav. color whus purple, & at her funeral, they let go 100 purple balloons. so in conclusion, whether its stupid to you, & possibly couldn't have meaning to it, to the wearer, it can have the greatest meaning in the world.

Stars usually mean nothing, and are usually used as "filler" pieces, which is to say that they are put in between tattoos that usually don't tie in together, so they're used as background pieces. They could mean something to the person wearing it, but doubtful.
