A positive connotation is an implied meaning that is good. So some positive connotations of the word firm would be reliability, strength, and muscularity.

The connotation depends on the context. If you use the word 'firm' to describe a person, the connotation 'reliability' might be implied. But the connnotation 'muscularity' would not be implied unless you were speaking of a person or animal's body. 'Strength', however, might be implied in both contexts.

A lawyer firm is simply a group of lawyer who all work together under the same name; it is a businesses of lawyers that you can go to for your legal troubles. Lawyers do not have to work in firms, but they often choose to so that they can have more exposure and a better chance of landing big clients and making more money. This also makes it easy for a single firm to offer all sort of legal help. They could have attorneys for business disputes, criminal charges, and contested wills. By being able to offer a variety of services, law firms are able to market themselves to a much larger group of people and find more success.

A big reason that young lawyers join firms is because they need the name recognition. When a lawyer has just gotten out of law school, no one knows who he or she is. The lawyer will not get much business without an incredibly aggressive marketing campaign and a bit of luck. By joining a firm, they will have cases given to them that come to the firm in general. People will not have to know their name, but only the name of the firm. They can then use this success to find more and more clients and to make it so that their own name is well-known in legal circles.

Once they have become big enough, many attorneys will leave and start their own firms. This is similar to employees leaving a business to start a similar business. They will want to be in charge and to take command of the firm, creating it to be the type of firm that they desire most. They will then bring on other lawyers and expand -- some of these lawyers will in turn leave to start their own firms, but there will be enough new ones coming along that the firm can sustain itself.

Lawyers who are promoted to the top of their firm may never choose to leave. They may not want to have their own firm. It takes a long time to build up publicity and name recognition. If they start with a firm that is already popular, that many people have already heard of, they will be guaranteed to have work in the future. They may not want to take the risk and branch out since they could find that they will then have no work.
