A:Thirteen epistles have been attributed to Paul and, of these, Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Philemon, Galatians,1 Thessalonians and Philippians are generally regarded by scholars to have been genuine. Some dispute remains about 1 Thessalonians and Philippians because a computer analysis shows that they do not seem to have the same style of authorship as the benchmark, Galatians.

1Thessalonians lacks apparent purpose, except as a vehicle for the important denunciations of the Jews in chapter 2, for example verse 2:15 when speaking of the Jews: 'Who both killed the Lord Jesus and their own prophets ...'. Paul was proud to be a Jew and made frequent mention of this fact in his genuine epistles, so why would he refer to the Jews in this way, in the third person? This is the only one of the seven epistles more widely thought to be genuine that blames the Jews or indeed any other nation for the death of Jesus.

Philippians also seems to lack purpose. Philippians 1:1 refers to bishops, a role that did not exist until long after the time of Paul, but that reference does not make the entire epistle a forgery. It may simply indicate an interpolation that occupies a few verses or perhaps the whole of first chapter, and other interpolations may have been placed elsewhere in the epistle. Philippians 2:5-11 appear to be a pre-Pauline hymn that the author, whether Paul or another, copied into the epistle.

Paul did not write often so when he did, he covered as much material as possible, discussing any objections his addressees had raised, criticising them for any backsliding and encouraging them in the faith.

One theme that seems common to Galatians, 1Corinthians, Corinthians and Romans is the collection for the poor, identified as the Christians of the Jerusalem Church. Arguably this collection took place during the empire-wide famine of 44-48 CE. If so, this gives us a new estimate of when these epistles were written.

Philemon differs from the other Pauline letters in that Paul was interceding to a fellow-Christian on behalf of a slave who was returning to his master.

What letters to st Paul?

A:Most scholars accept that Paul actually wrote seven of the thirteen epistles attributed to him: Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Philemon, Galatians, Philippiansand1 Thessalonians.A.Q. Morton set out to actually prove that Paul wrote these letters, by use of computer analysis. He assumed that Paul wrote Galatians and compared the style of the remaining epistles to this undisputed epistle. His analysis found that only Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians and Philemon contain exactly the same writing style as Galatians, but most scholars maintain that Paul did write seven of the epistles in the New Testament.
