Book Time is a predetermined amount of time established by any one individual mechanic or shop, that a particular repair should take. However, not all mechanics have the same time for each job - just as the labor rate varies at different places. Furthermore, the book time varies per make and model due to some vehicles taking longer to repair than others. This again is at the mechanics/shops discretion. Once the book time is established it gives the mechanic a reasonable allotment of time that a consumer can be billed for the work performed. It encourages a mechanic to work quickly. Time spent after book time usually is unpaid for mechanics. It also provides safety to consumers that a slow mechanic wont charge large amounts of labor due to there own setbacks.
