Subtotal means partial. So a subtotal amputation of the right external ear means part of the ear was removed - usually due to injury or some times due to necrosis of ear tissue (not the inner ear). Sometimes this is done to remove cartilage in the ear to reduce its size and the ear is also pulled back some so a person does not have to suffer the indignity of having large ears that stick out too far.
