The esophagus can be viewed by a physician by using a type of scope, called an endo scope. This type of scope is usually used on a sedated medicated patient, in a controlled health care setting under continuous monitoring (watch). There is often a camera and/or maneuverable tip, perhaps with biopsy (tissue sample) capabilities that gives the practitioner other options during the endoscopic procedure. Patients can usually expect to be discharged after a brief recovery period once alert and oriented and able to breathe and swallow on their own.
