The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) does not have any official opinion as to what metal ziff is. Ziff is mentioned twice in the Book of Mormon (in Mosiah 11:3 and 11:8). The church's only official doctrine or statement as to what ziff is says "Probably a metal used by the Nephites".

They used to be. The Stone Age, The Bronze Age, The Iron Age. Most of the old cultures, Greek, Roman, Egyptian and many others used copper and bronze for their tools. Iron came along, much harder and it became the metal of choice for weapons. Copper is too soft to make an acceptable knife.

Is iron or copper stronger?

Even in its pure form, iron is stronger than copper (although copper doesn't rust the way iron does) and iron is also used in making various kinds of steel which are much stronger than iron, and incomparably stronger than copper. Copper can also be used in alloys which are stronger than pure copper, such as brass and bronze, however, even the strongest copper alloy is much weaker than steel. Copper is much more electrically conductive than steel, and along with its greater flexibility and resistance to chemical corrosion, this makes it much better for wiring than iron or any iron alloy would be. So for each metal, there are particular uses. . Bronze (an alloy of mostly copper with up to 23% tin) is a much stronger metal than iron. This is why during the early iron age, the Roman foot soldiers were issued iron swords but their commanders had bronze swords.

Why are pennies bronze colored?

Pennies are bronze colored because for many decades they were in fact made of copper or bronze. Those metals were chosen because they were cheap enough that they could be used in enormous amounts to make low-value coins, along with being hard enough to stand up to a lot of wear. When the price of copper went up in the 1980s the Mint had to choose a cheaper metal to avoid having pennies that were worth more than 1¢ each. Zinc was selected, partly because it's not expensive and partly because the zinc lobby has a lot of influence. Zinc is silvery in color, so to prevent confusion with dimes and to maintain the 200-year tradition of "copper" pennies, the zinc coins are plated with copper so that they look almost like their older bronze cousins.
