I received a similar rifle from my grandfather. He had a letter from Remington stating the rifle was manufactured between 1900 - 1907, if I remember correctly.
1925 - will be date code stamped if original barrel (or date of replaced barrel or swapped barrel ;) See related links for details.
After 1920 Remington stamped a date code on the left side of the barrel in front of the receiver. The diagram and date code table is on the Remington Society of America.
The Remington model 4 rolling block rifle was made between 1890-1933.If you have a model 4S military rifle, then these were made by Remington from 1913-1923.your rifle has either a 22.5in barrel,or a 24in barrel. These were chambered in .22,.25 Stevens,or 32 caliber.
Stamped on barrel, Barrel and reciever one piece.
CHeck the receiver and barrel
They have date code stamps on the barrel which can be looked up on the manufacture date link on the Remington Society of America. --- Update: It's important to note that the barrel on the shotgun MAY not be the barrel that was originally on the shotgun at purchase. Check the serial number with Remington.
Who made it, what caliber is it, is it a rifle, shotgun or hadgun, how long is the barrel, is the barrel round or octagon, what is the stock made out of, what is the serial number(if any)? The barrel date code is the primary method of dating a Remington. Of course, if the barrel is not the original barrel for the gun that complicates things. The Remington factory could probably date it by serial number. sales@countrygunsmith.net
1920
It was made in 1929, you didn't mention what caliber probably 22 rf so with a octagon barrel it's a 12C (if it is a .22 WRF / REM SPl) then a 12CS. The value is greatly dependent on condition in mint condition as high as 1,200 drops to 1/2 that price at 90% and then drops quickly from then on.
By the serial number and markings on the barrel.
