Egypt has always been called that in western languages, beginning with the Greeks, who called the region Aigyptos, a name derived from the Egyptian term Hwt kA ptH, which means "Temple of the Soul of Ptah" and was one of the names of the northern Egyptian city of Memphis, 12 miles from present-day Cairo.

The native name of the country was kmt, which means "the black land," a reference to the rich alluvial soil deposited by the annual Nile floods.
